Biography
Dr. Serajul I. Bhuiyan is an Associate Professor and
Program Director of Department of Mass Communications at Texas
A & M University-Texarkana (TAMUT) since July 1, 2002.
He comes to TAMUT from working as a journalism
professor, print journalist and an international training
consultant abroad. Dr. Bhuiyan began his career as a
faculty with Bangladesh Agricultural University in 1986 and
served the university until 1991. He worked as an
Assistant Professor in the School of Communication Studies at
Nanyang Technological University in Singapore for three years
(1996-1999). During that period, Dr. Bhuiyan was a
Visiting Professor at the University of South Australia, the
Griffith University in Australia, and at the National
University of Ireland. Dr. Bhuiyan joined Alcorn State
University in Mississippi as an Associate Professor of
Communications in Fall 1999 and worked there until June 30,
2002. He joined Texas A & M University-Texarkana as
Associate Professor and Program Director of Mass
Communications/Journalism Department on July 1, 2002.
Dr. Bhuiyan earned his Ph.D. degree in Mass
Communications from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in May
1996 as a World Bank Scholar. He received his B.Sc.
(Hon.) in Ag. Economics and Rural Sociology and M.Sc. in Ag.
Communication from Bangladesh Agricultural University.
He further studied at Cornell University, Iowa State
University, University of Dubuque, Iowa, and at the University
of Philippines at Los Banos, Philippines.
He has received professional training in journalism and
communication from Harvard University, Dow Jones Newspaper
Fund Inc., Poynter Institute, American Press Institute,
American Society of Newspaper Editors and the Pew Research
Center.
He worked for the United Nations, the Netherlands
Government, and the government of Malaysia as a training
consultant. He worked with the newspapers as a
reporter/stringer/ guest columnist and associate editor for
about 15 years in USA, Singapore, Japan and Bangladesh.
Dr. Bhuiyan was an associate editor of Madison Times, guest
columnist for Wisconsin State Journal, The Capital Times in
Wisconsin, USA, The Business Times in Singapore and the Asahi
Evening News in Tokyo. He was a news reporter for the Daily
Ittefaq, The New Nation, Radio and Television in Bangladesh.
Dr. Bhuiyan was awarded a fellowship from the American
Society of Newspaper Editors (ASNE) Institute for Journalism
Excellence in the summer 2001. Under this fellowship, he
worked for the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer, a Night Ridder
newspaper in Georgia, and he interviewed former President
Jimmy Carter in July 20, 2001, which created national and
international headlines.
He acted as a peer reviewer for various professional
journals in Asia, Australia and in United States. Dr.
Bhuiyan is actively involved in Association for Education in
Journalism and Mass Communication. He has authored over 46
research papers and wrote a chapter of a book on "Media
in Asia." Dr. Bhuiyan is writing a book with
Professor Everett M. Rogers on information technology and
media.
