InternetCommunication and the Constitution in Cyberspace by Stephen A. Smith. The problems we face as communication scholars are evident: we must work to preserve traditional free speech rights for intellectual inquiry and discussion; we must seek to grasp the appropriate judicial metaphors for extending constitutional freedoms into the virtual vortex of the new technological reality; we must develop communication policies for our own institutional communities that can serve as models for other electronic communities and the nation; we must defend the freedoms of access and expression and the rights of privacy and intellectual property upon which our discipline depends. Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility is a public-interest alliance of computer scientists and others concerned about the impact of computer technology on society. We work to influence decisions regarding the development and use of computers because those decisions have far-reaching consequences and reflect our basic values and priorities. As technical experts, CPSR members provide the public and policymakers with realistic assessments of the power, promise, and limitations of computer technology. As concerned citizens, we direct public attention to critical choices concerning the applications of computing and how those choices affect society. Cyber-Rights &
Cyber-Liberties (UK) is a non-profit civil liberties organisation
founded on January 10, 1997. Its main purpose is to promote free speech
and privacy on the Internet and raise public awareness of these important
issues. |
