This article reports how the U.S. government, after an intense internal debate, decided against intervening in a key court case between powerful transnational corporations (TNCs) and a Massachusetts law to promote democracy in Burma.

For several years, a small group of lawyers and labor advocates has been trying to hold transnational companies responsible for their actions by suing them in the United States for benefiting from human rights abuses overseas. This article examines how these corporation chasers are beginning to see signs of possible success.
