About My Global Village

In the spring of 2004, Professor Yahya R. Kamalipour gave his Global Communications class a project: Develop a web site that deals with global issues. The class was comprised of one undergraduate and nine graduate students in the Department of Communication at Purdue University Calumet, Hammond, Indiana. What sounded like an easy task was proven to be quite challenging. We had to create and respond to many questions:  What are the global issues? How do we decide? How do we categorize?  These were just a few of the questions that were discussed repeatedly.

The Canadian media critic, Marshall McLuhan, conceptualized the term “Global Village” in the 1960s.  Capitalizing on his popular concept, My Global Village is intended to serve as an electronic information portal for the world. Through electronic media, and now the Internet, events in one part of our globe can be experienced in real-time in other parts, which is what human experience was like when our ancestors lived in small villages. War, peace, human rights, famine, inequality, and environmental problems are just a few of the timeless issues that are covered. Timeless because they have been issues for some time and, unfortunately, they will be issues for some time to come.

After a semester of dialoguing, tweaking, and researching, we laid the foundation for this site hoping that others will continue to build upon what we have started.  Even though we found it formidable to build a complete village, we were able to list an array of global issues, topics, and useful links. Whether you are looking for information on a certain issue or researching for a paper, you should find this electronic portal a valuable resource.  Think of it as a global supermarket of ideas, issues, and topics.

Our village is nowhere near completion.  We will rely on you (visitors) to continue building and enhancing the village. Please contact us and send your recommendations and suggestions.  Our goal is to inform and educate the inhabitants of our village and to make you proud to say, “This is My Global Village!”

Thank you for visiting!

"Peace is a daily, a weekly, a monthly process,
gradually changing opinions, slowly eroding old barriers,
quietly building new structures."
-- John F. Kennedy

"Imagine all the people living life in peace.
You may say I'm a dreamer,
but I'm not the only one.
I hope someday you'll join us,
and the world will be as one."
-- John Lennon
