Welcome to the Writing Program at Purdue University Calumet (PUC)! Our goal is to get you thinking and acting like a writer. You will need these abilities when your professors and bosses ask you to articulate, develop, and support your position. We see the writing process as a way for you to develop your thoughts, create meaning, and construct texts that address personal, public, and professional issues. PUC’s Writing Program stresses the processes of writing and reading, and the problem posing and problem solving skills one needs as a university-level writer. Through an emphasis on audience, purpose, and genre, the courses enable you to analyze writing situations and then engage a variety of writing and reading strategies to produce quality writing that is focused, unified, coherent, and developed. In each writing course, you will produce at least 4600 words that have been worked through to a finished product. This writing includes productive revision in conjunction with peers, your instructor, a Supplemental Instructor, and/or Writing Center tutors. You will compose narratives, reviews, analyses, strong responses, and arguments. We offer writing courses at the 100 level: English 100, 104, 105, and 108--as well as English 024 and 025 which are part of the Achievement Academy Program. You may take one or more of these courses, depending on your initial placement in the program. The following pages provide information about the courses and what you will be learning.
