In ENG 100 and 104, you explore and practice your writing processes, analyze and solve the problems inherent in writing situations, summarize and analyze various types of texts, and finally use these tools to enter written conversations by analyzing issues and writing strong responses to those issues.

The topics for reading and writing in 100 and 104 vary, ranging from adolescence to writing to conserving energy.  In class, you will participate in whole class discussions, small group work, and one-on-one conferences with your instructors.  Your work is assessed and evaluated in portfolios: collections of your work including final copies and draft work.

Both 100 and 104 fulfill the first-semester requirement. English 100 includes two extra hours of class time per week to work on your writing.  English 100 and/or 104 should be taken in your first year.

Placement:  You will be placed in English 104, 100, 025, or 026 based on the average of your high school grades if you graduated from high school within the past five years.

--Students with an “A” or “B” average in high school English are placed into Engl 104.

--Students with a “C” average in high school English are placed into Engl 100.

--Students with averages lower than “C” are placed in 025 and 026 in the Academic Achievement Academy.

If you have been out of school for five years, you will take a placement test to determine your placement into 025, 026, 100, or 104.
