1. During the 1920s, competitive high school sports attracted limited crowds in the Calumet region. Teams were small in size. However, interest and participation increased during the 1930s, when, for the first time, a majority of teenagers began to attend high school. Quickly, high school sports became an important part of regional culture. Large crowds attended football and basketball games, especially during championship seasons.
