A VIRTUAL MUSEUM FOR THE CALUMET REGION: EXHIBITS |
A Visitor's Guide To The Museum: How To Navigate The Site
Currently, the museum has three exhibits. Two of the exhibits are complete the other is currently under constriction. The first exhibit (summer 2000), High School Sports, is interpretive. It contains five separate topics. Their titles are listed below. The second exhibit (summer 2000), Sports Pages in the Lake County Times, is interactive. It provides viewers with an opportunity to chose from among a large number of newspaper articles from the years 1915 through 1918. The major portion of the exhibit is a large and imposing annotated index. The index describes thousands of articles. Of these, selected entries are highlighted in blue. By clicking on the highlighted text, viewers may choose to read articles that students selected as noteworthy. Students also organized four collections of articles on topics they found especially interesting. The subjects include early professional football, boxing, the response of the sporting community to World War I, and accounts of high school athletics.
The under construction exhibit (spring 2001),History of Real Estate, Furniture and Plumbing in the Calumet Region, focused on the history of three real estate developers, Frank R. Martin, Roscoe E. Woods and Frank Wachewicz. Also in this section you can learn about plumbing and furniture in the Region. This exhibit also includes an "Interactive City Directory" for the subdivisions of Woodmar, Kenwood (Hammond) and the subdivisions created by Frank Wachewicz. The "Interactive City Directories" can be viewed in either alphabetical order or 'street by street'. In these respective directories, you can see who lived in the subdivision, the number of children they had, the name of their spouse, their occupation, if they owned or rented their house and in some instances you can view a present day picture of the house. Lastly the exhibit includes a handy 'Street Name Changes Guide' which was tells of around a hundred Hammond streets that have changed their names over the years.
To view an exhibit, scroll to either of the tables of contents below and left click on the highlighted text next to a title. You may examine other topics by returning to this page, which serves as a table of contents for the exhibits. To return to this page, simply click on "Table of Contents" buttons that appear throughout the exhibits.
