Minas:
Edward Minas started out with a $1200 dollar investment and opened a
store in a twenty-foot by seventy-five foot building at State and Oakley. In
1894 Minas’ Store was in a three-story building. Additions were made in 1904 and
1913, which gave him a total of 175ft. of frontage on State St. Minas became the
city’s premier retailer with the passing of the Lion Store.

Lion Store (Kaufman & Wolf):
The Lion Store (Kaufman & Wolf) began as Leo Wolf’s Shoe Shop in the
1880s and was located at the corner of State and Hohman. Brother-in-law Carl
Kaufman joined him in 1898. As Kaufman & Wolf grew to include dry goods,
furniture, and groceries, between 1899 and 1908, they opened a separate
furniture store at Sibley and Hohman. A third Lion Store was opened in 1927,
but was sold to the Goldblatt Brothers five years later.
