STREET NAME CHANGES HOME PAGE |
Throughout the years the city of Hammond has changed the names of many streets. Most of changes occurred on June 3, 1930 when City Ordinance 2201 was passed. This document changed the name of over eighty streets. Most of the street name changes were on east-west numbered streets. The east-west numbered streets were changed from a mix of Gary (example 15th Avenue is fifteen streets south of US Steel, downtown Gary) and Chicago (example 173rd Street is 173 streets south of Madison Street, downtown Chicago) numbered streets. The ordinance changed all of the east-west Gary numbered streets, to Chicago numbered streets. It also gave the city a new house numbering system.
Besides City Ordinance 2201, the city has made numerous other street name changes, these changes were discovered by viewing old maps and city directories.
